Birding in Ancestral Route

The Guaviare department is home to more than 600 bird species corresponding to the ecosystems associated with the eastern plains, the Amazon and the remains of the Guyanese shield, so you can enjoy a wide variety of birds that will fall in love with their beautiful colours and charismatic personality as you tour unparalleled landscapes over rocky flooding areas and natural protection areas.

Welcome to the Ancestral route

In this activity you will be accompanied by us and our local guides with a broad knowledge of the birds of the area, who will make your trip an unforgettable experience in the habitat of one of the most important felines in America; the jaguar «Panthera onca», an important species for the movement of the ancient communities and the protagonist in the current processes of community surveillance.

We have identified points for easy photography, of some species such as the Guianan Cock-of-the-rock, that make it possible to capture spectacular images of these beautiful and exemplary birds.

The first day we will start by the first path, which is located 2 kilometers from the hotel, on the Buena Vista path, where we will take the main route in an inundable forest in a very good state of conservation, of which we can highlight the Manakin of Wire-tailed Manakin, Long-billed Woodcreeper and the White-eared Jacamar, Cream-colored Woodpecker.

In the afternoon we will head to the trail that begins at the Black Canyon, where we will descend towards the Black Lagoon. During the walk we will enjoy the shady routes through the Black Canyon, as we admire the plants associated with the marismas of the Amazon wetlands that are the habitat of the Hoatzin, we will visit the Valley of the Labyrinths: entering by the estate La Esperanza, 10 km from the city centre of San José del Guaviare, where you will be treated by the Valencia family, you will walk through a natural recovery area and then cross through high rock formations, which will give you the impression of being in a maze, adorned with rupicle vegetation.

Walking we will reach the Gate of Orion, an outstanding rock formation, with a very interesting local history.

Then we will cross a plain,to known as the river of the seven colors of San Jose. This river has an aquatic plant known as the water nymph that makes its waters paint in different colors, giving a magical image, sure you will take the best landscape photograph in this place.

This beautiful place is located 19 km from the city centre of San José del Guaviare, by the road that leads to Barrancón, small coastal rivers that reach the most important river of the area, the Guaviare river, a especially for the habitat of seedbeds, shorebirds, shorebirds and waterfowl

The next day we continue to sidewalk Pizarra trail, walking about 1 hour, to arrive to the Natural Reserve, Villa Marcela, where we will enjoy a beautiful landscape over rocky cliffs and end in a natural viewpoint. In this trail we will be able to find the Guianan Cock-of-the-rock, hummingbirds such as the Gray-chinned Hermit and the Bronzy Jacamar and a great variety of tanagers.

For this day we will do a little painting in the farm of the Rojas family, this path is situated between the rocky forests, blossoming Arctic of the “Areniscas”, tropical forest and the mountains near the rivers, there we will be able to observe ants hills, then, a 3 hour tour by “Cerro Pinturas», where we can appreciate the huge panels with an artery of 12,000 years old. We will learn about the history of this beautiful and magical place, next to the birds and a natural cave that we will find on the tour.
