It All Began with a Bird

We never imagined that a single bird would change the course of our lives.

At the time, we were simply two advertising professionals with a passion for photography. Almost without realizing it, we started looking up. And when we did, we discovered a completely different Colombia.

Every outing became a discovery.

Every bird raised another question.

Until one day we came across a story that would stay with us forever.

It was Podiceps andinus, the Colombian Grebe.

The only bird species endemic to Colombia that has disappeared forever.

Learning its story left us with a question we could never ignore.

How could the country with the greatest bird diversity on Earth have lost a unique species without most Colombians even knowing it had ever existed?

That question became the beginning of everything.

Giving Birds a Voice

The more we traveled, the more we realized that birds were trying to tell us something.

They spoke about disappearing forests.

Threatened species.

Water.

Communities.

And the future of entire landscapes.

Many people assume we’re biologists.

We’re not.

We’re communicators.

We deeply admire science.

Our role is different.

We don’t produce science. We create awareness.

That’s why we use photography, storytelling, documentaries, conferences and communication to help birds reach people who had never noticed them before.

That’s how The Voice of the Birds was born.

Who Will Protect Them Tomorrow?

Another question soon appeared.

Who will protect these birds twenty or thirty years from now?

Every answer pointed in the same direction.

Children.

For Niky, that question carried a very personal meaning.

Years earlier she had made a life decision not to have children.

Instead, she wanted to dedicate her life to doing something meaningful for them.

She never imagined that birds would show her how.

That was the beginning of Guardián de las Aves.

Today, hundreds of children have become part of our BirdCamps, expeditions and educational programs.

Our greatest hope for conservation isn’t found in a forest.

It’s found in the eyes of a child holding binoculars for the very first time.

Pajarerizar*

As we crossed Colombia we realized something extraordinary.

Birds were never the destination.

They were the way.

They taught us to slow down.

To observe before judging.

To appreciate what once seemed invisible.

That’s when we created a word that didn’t exist.

Pajarerizar.

For us, Pajarerizar means much more than watching birds.

It means learning to see the world differently.

Because conservation always begins with a new way of looking.

*Pajarerizar is a word we created to describe something that goes beyond birding (Birdize).

The Story Continues

Birds Experience is only one part of our lives.

Throughout the rest of the year we continue exploring Colombia, creating content through Birds Colombia, working with children through Guardián de las Aves, organizing two annual BirdCamps, speaking at conferences, advising birdwatching destinations, and leading the strategy and content of the Colombia Birdwatching Congress.

Everything we discover, every conversation we have, every forest we explore and every community we meet becomes part of the experiences we create for our travelers.

We never wanted to become influencers.

We wanted to become inspirers.

Because we believe the value of a story isn’t measured by how many people see it…

But by how many lives it changes.
